May 19, 1925: Malcolm X is born.
In 1960, LIFE magazine assigned Arnold, who died in January 2012 at the age of 99, to document the days and nights of Malcolm X, the controversial and intensely charismatic public face of the Nation of Islam. For nearly a year, she followed the thug-turned-devout Muslim and activist from Washington to New York to Chicago. (Eve Arnold—Magnum)
See Eve Arnold’s photographs of Malcolm X here.

Eve Arnold was SO BADASS. I grew up looking at a book my dad had of her work. I think she was my second photo hero (the first being my dad, of course).

Tim Hetherington, Chris Hondros: Remembering Them As They Lived

Oof. Has it really been a year?

I didn’t know Chris Hondros or Tim Hetherington, and I’ve spent the last year feeling as though I have no right to be as broken-hearted as I am that they’re gone. I cried in the bathroom at work the day it happened. I cried during the memorial held for them at the Eddie Adams Workshop in October (the two of them were supposed to have been there that weekend), and again when my teammates Dominic and Enrico won awards in their names. I cried like a baby just last month, when showing slides from Hetherington’s book Infidel to my students. I’m crying right now.

I will never forget them, or the work they did.

Amulet Representing Two Fingers. Egypt, said to be from the area of Memphis. Ptolemaic Period, 332–30 B.C.E. Obsidian
A detailed likeness of the index and second fingers of the right hand was one of the many amulets placed on the mummy. This amulet was meant to close the incision through which the embalmers removed internal organs from the body prior to mummification. Remains of the resin used during embalming are still visible between these fingers. In addition to offering protection, an amulet of this shape was meant to help the deceased function better in the afterlife.

Wow this is lovely.

“Abbey Road, Before Crossing” (photographer unknown)
Paul McCartney in sandals fixing Ringo Starr’s jacket. John Lennon maybe hiking up his pants. Random old lady. I love everything about this. The band bigger than Jesus, moments before staging one of the most iconic photographs ever taken, were just four dudes standing on a street corner.
