Details from Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights, 1503-1504.

I got really into the The Garden of Earthly Delights recently because I’ve been making my own triptychs. I have two books on it out from the library right now (one of which reproduces it in full size, section by section). It is a totally nutty piece of art and is endlessly giving when it comes to weird little details. You can see the whole thing here.

Dorothea Tanning, “Birthday,” 1942
This painting is currently on view as part of “In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States” at LACMA. It is absolutely stunning in person—this reproduction doesn’t come close to doing it justice. If you’ll be in LA between now and May 6, you should absolutely go to LACMA to see the show. It is one of the best exhibitions I have ever seen. So good that I broke down and bought the catalog at full price then and there, which I never do.
